Set the rhythm of your music with Cadence

Your iPhone can now keep pace with your workout. Cadence is an iPhone/iTouch app that lets you browse through your music collection by tempo.

The app, once installed and set up, presents an icon of a metronome. This is the interface that you use to choose your preferred beats-per-minute, and the app then browses your music collection to select songs matching your preference. Going on a long-distance ride? Set it at a steady pace matching your preferred cycling cadence. Climbing a hill? Turn up the tempo; turn up your cadence.

In order to make Cadence work most effectively on your iPhone, it’s recommended that you use Cadence Desktop to sort your iTunes library by tempo. This can take some time, and only functions (currently) on a Mac. After doing that, re-sync your iPhone to your desktop iTunes, then run Cadence, which does its own sorting through, and you’re good! Once you’ve begun to rely on this app, of course, you’ll be cognizant of making sure that all your new music imports come with tempo meta-data attached, which will simplify the process greatly for future downloads.

The Cadence app is sensitive to anything from 70 beats per minute to 200 beats per minute, and the app includes a tap feature that lets you move up or down the beats per minute scale one beat per minute at a time while you’re on the go. This is great for when you feel yourself starting to lag during a workout and just need to turn up the pace a notch or two.
