Garmin Oregon 550: GPS, camera, and much more

Garmin Oregon 550

Garmin has long been providing us with high-quality GPS devices. The Oregon 550 is a handheld GPS device at heart, but it does much more. This is a waterproof, touchscreen GPS with a 3.2 megapixel digital camera and a 3-axis compass. The whole package weighs 6.8 ounces and operates for around 16 hours on two rechargeable AA NiMH batteries. (Recharger is included.)

The three-axis compass works in 3D, meaning that, unlike an ordinary compass, you don’t have to hold the Oregon 550 flat to get an accurate reading. The digital camera features 850MB of internal memory, 4x digital zoom, autofocus, and it geotags each picture that you take automatically. The Oregon 550 also includes a microSD card slot, to hold as many pictures as you care to take.

The Oregon 550 is also compatible with Garmin heartrate monitors and speed and cadence sensors, and can be mounted to handlebars as easily as it can be mounted to a belt. Use the microSD card to import terrain maps comparable to 1:24k-scale USGS maps, turning the Oregon 550 into your very best trail guide with elevations, summits, roads, trails, parks, and more.

You won’t get lost in the wilderness while you’re lost in the fun of wilderness photography if you’re using Garmin’s Oregon 550 to do your shooting.
